AIT Bridges and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure Join Forces to Spearhead Sustainability

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

AIT Bridges, a division of Advanced Infrastructure Technologies (AIT), a designer and supplier of composite bridge systems and structural components for commercial construction, announced today it has joined the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), as a member, gaining accreditation for its employees and projects. For the last decade, AIT Bridges and ISI have both advocated for more sustainable practices in the infrastructure industry and this joint collaboration will help drive sustainability and resiliency forward.

Specializing in non-corrosive, advanced composite materials, AIT Bridges is a leader in fabricating and installing sustainable bridge solutions. AIT’s composite arch bridge system uses concrete-filled composite tubes and FRP decking, providing a superior alternative to traditional small-to medium-sized bridges. The company’s CT Girder Bridge System is a composite-tub girder substitute for steel and concrete girders. Both bridge systems were developed at the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center and feature lightweight, sustainable materials, zero corrosion and less maintenance over time, all key attributes to creating a more sustainable infrastructure for future generations.

“AIT Bridges success has always been built around our vision for sustainability and superior products. Our Envision Sustainability Professionals (ENV SP) training will further along our efforts to provide a superior bridge design to every project we complete,” said Ken Sweeney, president and Chief Engineer, AIT Bridges. “Envision verification requires completion of the verification process and a sustainability ranking. Once complete, we look forward to working with ISI and verifying our first project within the next year.”

ISI was founded by the American Public Works Association (APWA), the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). ISI has developed and manages Envision, a framework that encourages systemic changes in the planning, design and delivery of sustainable and resilient infrastructure through education, training, and third-party project verification. There are more than 200 qualified Envision companies and more than 80 qualified Envision agencies that work with ISI to promote sustainability through awards and credentials.

“Sustainability is vital to the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry. Collaborating with members, like AIT Bridges, is critical to the success of our mission,” said Anthony Kane, president and CEO of ISI. “We believe that working closely with our members to champion sustainability and resiliency will help cities, communities, and municipalities design and deliver civil infrastructure that boosts economies, enhances societal health and well-being, and protects the environment. Together, we can Envision a sustainable world.”

About AIT Bridges AIT Bridges, a division of Advanced Infrastructure Technologies, is the leading producer of innovative composite bridge solutions, providing a unique tailored customer experience. We aim to provide cost-effective and high-quality composite bridge solutions to meet today’s complex design, durability, and environmental challenges. Our systems utilize components from the 'Bridge-in-a-Backpack' technology, developed over an 11+ year period by the Advanced Structures and Composites Center at the University of Maine. The goal was to develop a rapidly deployable bridge technology for the military. In 2008, Advanced Infrastructure Technologies (AIT) was formed to commercialize the inflatable arch technology by designing a composite arch bridge system built from the original technology. AIT Bridges expanded the composite product line this past year by adding the Composite Tub Girder Bridge System to its product solution offerings. The resulting composite bridge systems utilize advanced composite materials to produce a rapidly constructed bridge systems that offer an extended lifespan with little to no maintenance.

About ISI The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) is the organization that developed and manages Envision, a framework that encourages systemic changes in the planning, design and delivery of sustainable and resilient infrastructure through education, training, and third-party project verification. Based in Washington, DC, ISI was established in 2010 by the American Public Works Association (APWA), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), who collaborated with the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design to develop Envision.
